Augustus, 27 BC-AD 14. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.78 g, 5 h), uncertain mint in Spain (Colonia Patricia?), circa 19-18 BC. CAESAR AVGVSTVS Bare head of Augustus to right. Rev. MARTIS VLTORIS Tetrastyle and round-doomed temple of Mars Ultor set on three steps; within, Mars, helmeted and cloaked, standing facing, head to left, holding aquila in his right hand and signum in his left. BMC p. 65 note *. CBN 1104. Cohen 205. RIC 72. Light scratches and with a large scuff on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.


The temple of Mars Ultor shown on the reverse of this denarius was where, after offering prayers and sacrifices, the soldiers would begin their journey when going on campaign.
